A dedicated group of walkers will scale every peak on the Malvern Hills to raise funds for the Salvation Army.

Malvern branch leader Steve Smith and volunteer supporters Pete Arnold and Chris, Matt and Neil Styles will begin the gruelling challenge tomorrow (Saturday).

They start at 10am at Chase End Hill, covering 11 miles and 14 peaks before finishing at North Malvern Quarry car park.

They hope to arrive at the Salvation Army base, in Newtown Road, at 3pm.

"It'll be quite a gruelling walk but we're looking forward to it," said Mr Smith. "I've walked the length of the Hills before but never all in one go."

The walk is part of a national fundraising campaign, to raise a total of £3 million.

All money will be pooled centrally and divided among each local branch.

"Our target is £1,850 and we hope the walk will contribute a good deal to that," explained Mr Smith.

"The money is vital to keep all our community services running."

Malvern branch funds will help run a day centre for people with physical disabilities, held three days a week at the Newtown Road base.

Door to door collections will also be held nationally during the fundraising campaign, which will run until Sunday, October 2.

Anyone interested in supporting the walkers through sponsorship can call 01684 578078 or drop into the base tomorrow afternoon.
