Glasses were raised at a West Malvern pub to toast an extra-special regular who has never missed a day there in 30 years.

Staff and customers at the Brewers Arms rallied round to organise a surprise 80th birthday party for Len Cole, who has enjoyed a daily lunchtime drink without fail since the 70s.

More than 50 guests filled the pub with streamers and balloons to greet him when he arrived on Friday night (August 26).

Representatives from Marstons brewery presented him with a crystal tankard and guests clubbed together to buy him a birthday food hamper.

"He was very shocked, I'd even say amazed, he's a quiet chap, but I could see by his face that he was thrilled," said pub landlord Trevor Marston.

"He said to me the next day, 'Trevor, I'm embarrassed, I didn't buy a round, I didn't know I had so many friends'.

"It was a really fantastic night."

Old friends dug out pictures of Mr Cole to decorate the walls and a birthday cake was made specially for the occasion.

"The cake was made like the Times crossword, as he does that all the time, with pictures of his cats on there too," explained Mr Marston.

"His cats are as familiar to regulars as he is, they come in through the window and sit on his lap."

Not even a devastating fire at the pub 13 years ago could disrupt Mr Cole's routine.

He was among customers and locals who joined forces to set up a makeshift pub in the outbuilding, known as the Arm Pit.

He will be officially called to open the newly refurbished Arm Pit when work finishes next month.

"He's a lovely old chap, and a very valued customer," added Mr Marston.
