THE culinary skills of two male cooks impressed the judges at this year's Hanley Swan and Hanley Castle Village Show.

While John Bunn won the cup for most points in the cookery and preserves section, Eddie Thomas triumphed in the best-decorated fairy cakes and best Victoria sandwich classes.

The 53rd show attracted almost 70 exhibitors to Hanley Swan Village Hall. Ann Davies, chairman of the organising committee, said: "With the sun shining it was another successful event."

Fruit and vegetable judge Basil Hart was particularly impressed by the produce entered by Jack Payne, from Upton, but considered all entries of good quality considering this year's growing season was not ideal.

Show organisers are seeking information about three cups found by the preserves judge.

Roger Broomfield, who has been connected with the show since it began, found a pair of trophies for walking races and one for a soap-box derby, among his late mother's possessions.

The cups have names and dates on them and may have been competed for between 1960 and 1969. Anyone with information on the cups, or the rules and route of the walking race and soap-box derby, should contact Ann Davies on 01684 310861.

The cups could be competed for at next year's show.
