A CHARITY music event set up by the daughter of a Worcester woman suffering from motor neurone disease is flourishing, more than a year after it started.

Rob Hurcomb and partner Helen Clarke, of Northwick Road, Northwick, Worcester, were inspired to start up the soul and motown evening at the Abbey Hotel in Abbey Road, Malvern, after Helen's mum, Pam Goodall, was diagnosed with the disease in April 2003.

Mrs Goodall, aged 69, of Lower Wick, Worcester, sadly died in April last year but the night - which started in February last year - proved so popular the couple decided to continue it in her memory.

It has since been held five or six times at the venue, helping to raise a total of £5,500 for the association, which provides care and support for people with MND and their families, and funds vital research into causes, treatments and a cure.

Rob and friends John Farrell, from Laugherne Road, St John's, Worcester; John Palmer from Lansdowne Road, Malvern; and Steve Lloyd from Upper Howsell Road, Malvern, play a mix of soul and motown tracks.

Revellers will be getting ready to get all 'souled out' once again as tickets for the next night - on Saturday, October 29 - go on sale on Monday, September 5.

The last night was held about six months ago and Mr Hurcomb said the last three had been sell-outs and he expected the latest one to be no less of a success.

He added: "We started doing it because of Helen's mum and we wanted to raise awareness of the disease because not many people seemed to know about it at the time.

"It's kind of for all of the people who went to the Abbey Hotel in the early 70s. It's a bit like a reunion because all of these people have now grown up and want somewhere to go."

Tickets are priced £7.50 and are available from the Hereford suite at Abbey Hotel, or via: www.worcssoul.info
