THOUSANDS of people will head to Stourport tomorrow for the annual Land and River Carnival, which this year celebrates its 80th anniversary.

With good weather expected, Pete Roberts, the carnival's spokesman, said the event would be memorable.

He said: "It's a tremendous accolade for the town."

On the day there will be live music, dancers, river and road parades, wrestling and circus workshops for children. The coronation of Rebekah Crowther, aged 24, as the Carnival Queen will take place at about 2.45pm.

The event will finish with what promises to be a spectacular laser show and fireworks display.

Mr Roberts believes the carnival, which began in 1925 and has taken place every year except during the Second World War, shows no sign of waning. He said: "As far as I'm concerned it will go on indefinitely.

"I don't see why is should not - as long as we have the great support of volunteers.

"At the end of the day the carnival raises thousands for local charities."

He added that if anyone wanted to join in the boat and float parades they have until 11am tomorrow to register.

So far, about 20 to 30 boats are due to take part in the afternoon river parade with about 20 registered to take part in the evening parade. There will also be 20 floats in the float parade.

While the carnival has been a day of fun, the event in 2003 was marred with tragedy when 45-year-old Jane Tur-ner drowned when the boat she was in sank because it was over-loaded.

In May 2005, Tom Prescott was sentenced to one-year imprisonment, which was suspended for 18 months for her manslaughter.
