CRICKET fans across Worcestershire are backing plans to give one of England's heroes the freedom of the county as the final Ashes test gets underway today.

Ashley Giles, the spin bowler who hit the winning runs in England's last test victory, lives in Droitwich, and calls are now growing to give him official recognition in the town and county.

Millions are tuning in to watch the crucial final test to see if England regain the Ashes contest against Australia for the first time in 16 years.

Mid-Worcestershire MP Peter Luff is one of the leading voices calling for Giles, who also plays for Warwickshire, to be honoured if England achieve victory in the next five days.

The cricket fan said: "Of course his home town should honour such an achievement and, despite the fact he plays for the Old Enemy (Warwickshire) I hope Worcestershire might honour one of its adopted sons, too.

"Cricket is one of England's great gifts to the world and, should they win the Ashes all the players will receive all kinds of public recognition and Ashley Giles deserves to get the freedom of his home town - and a lot more besides."

Before the Ashes started back in July, Giles light-heartedly told the Worcester News: "If England win, I could be given the freedom of Droitwich Spa."

Now, with the Ashes on the verge of returning to England for the first time in 16 years, and with cricket fans bowled over by Giles' performances, the idea is gaining momentum.

Giles' teammate Andrew Flintoff was awarded the freedom of his home city, Preston, last week.

Droitwich mayor Richard Morris said: "I'm certainly a cricket fan and if Giles and his colleagues win the Ashes, I can take the idea to council and we'll see what's discussed. He's a good role model and it's certainly good for the town."
