Evesham 32pts, Harborne 16
EVESHAM got the new season under way with a deserved victory against higher league opposition last Saturday.
Under the new leadership of Luke Matthews, Evesham started brightly and took the lead through a trademark try from scrum-half Chris Evis that was converted by Matt Grove.
For long periods of the first half, Evesham were encamped in the Harborne half but more points didn't materialise.
The visitors slowly came back into the match and replied with an excellent try. A further penalty to then gave the visitors the interval lead but Evesham came out flying for the second half and were soon on the attack.
A penalty from Grove saw Evesham regain the lead and, after sustained pressure on the Harborne 22, the ball was spun wide for Sam King to round his winger and score a debut try in the corner. Grove converted from the touchline.
Harborne again replied with a try and further penalty but replacement Mike O'Loughlin found himself straight in the action as he collected Evis's beautifully weighted kick to score in the corner. King then raced in for another try before O'Loughlin rounded off proceedings with another fine try in the corner.
The match ball was sponsored by Buzz Electrics.
The Avon Street players start their league programme on Saturday when they entertain local rivals Bredon Star (3pm).
