BEWDLEY Town showed great determination to come from behind and pull off a 1-1 draw with Bromyard which extends their impressive start to life in West Midlands League Premier Division.

Bromyard used the flanks to try and catch Bewdley for pace, but Jason Thompson and Neil Turford defended well and prevented them from creating too many chances.

It took 20 minutes before either side managed to hit the target, with both keepers pulling off some great saves.

Lewis Pountney should have given Bewdley the lead on 27 minutes when a long kick by keeper Steve Thomas was mis-read by Bromyard defender Gareth McCarthy, but the striker's attempted lob went wide.

Pountney was frustrated again moments later when his on-target shot was repelled by a save from Bromyard stopper Barry McLean.

The start of the second half saw a midfield switch by boss Craig Payton with Tommy Ste-wart replacing Gavin Smith and immediately taking responsibility down the right, with Steve Holt moving inside. Although Holt saw a shot go wide, the second half was very much like the first.

It took 72 minutes for the first goal, which came to the visitors when Adie Crowther evaded a Turford tackle and crossed to the unmarked Craig Malins for a neat finish past Thomas.

Boss Payton responded by replacing Jason Thomas with Matt Payne to bolster the midfield further and Bewdley threw caution to the wind.

It was a tactical decision that paid off when the hosts won a free kick on 80 minutes with Jan Mulders rising highest to head in Holt's set-piece.

Bewdley face a tough game on Saturday, when they visit unbeaten Premier Division league-leaders Gornal Athletic at 2.45pm.
