Kidderminster

KIDDERMINSTER professional Pat Smith and his amateur partner Nathan Bailey fly off to the Algarve on Wednesday in search of victory at Europe's biggest pro-am, the Lombard Trophy.

Smith and Bailey clinched their place at the Grand Final with success in the regional final at Little Aston Golf Club in May with a score of 65, seven under par.

Bailey, playing off 17, contributed three successive birdies from the 12th hole, one becoming a nett eagle because of his handicap allowance.

The duo will join 15 other regional qualifiers from all over Great Britain and Ireland in the 36-hole final at the Ocean Course at Vale do Lobo, on September 16 and 17.

The winning professional picks up £10,000, and even the 16th finisher has the consolation of £750 from a prize fund of around £80,000 provided by sponsors, the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Competitors will be based at the nearby five-star Le Meridien Dona Filipa hotel.
