I FEEL I must respond to the letter from Mrs J Green (Thursday, September 1) regarding the Race for Life.

I took part in the race this year and returned my money several weeks ago. I recently received a card from Cancer Research saying it was not too late to send in my money. When I queried this they apologised and told me there was a backlog.

They did not know whether they had received my money or not. When I read your newspaper, I rang them again, they still have a backlog and still don't know if they have received my money.

How then can they know that 60 per cent of entrants have failed to pay? I told the person on the phone about your report, and she said that it was untrue, they do know that they have received more than 50 per cent of sponsors already.

If people have no intention of sending in money, it is indeed shameful, but please let's not be hasty by making sensational statements about 'evil women'. It is this that will make it hard to find sponsors in future. I, too, have lost a loved one to cancer as have so many of the other women who took part.
