MALVERN College pupil Rhys Davey competed in the U14 age group in the National Triathlon Inter Regional Championships at Speke, Liverpool, on Saturday.

To qualify for this event Rhys, who lives in Upper Welland and trains with Ledbury & District ASC, had won the West Midlands Championship and was competing against the winners of the other regions across England, Wales and Scotland.

Competitors swim 300m, cycle 8k and then run 2.4k at this age group. Rhys was in the leading group of four coming out of the water, a group that became three on the bike section.

Going into the run, there was nothing between Rhys and the other top two boys but the winner of the North East region quickly established a commanding lead.

Into the final run lap, Rhys was doing his best to stay with the competition but, having given his all, was struggling to keep with their demanding pace. In the last straight he gave a final push and came through to finish a most creditable third.
