LONGDON Primary is the first school in Worcestershire to take advantage of a new traffic-calming scheme.

The speed limit on the road past the school will be reduced to 20mph - but only when warning lights are flashing.

County councillor Tom Wells launched the first School Safety Zone on Tuesday.

"It means the reduced speed limit is in place when parents are bringing their kids to school in the morning and picking them up in the evening, the times when it's most needed," he said.

"The rest of the time, when it's not needed, at weekends and in the holidays, it does not apply."

Coun Wells said he would be campaigning to have the scheme introduced at other schools where it was needed.

"It's great that the first one in the county is here and not in Redditch or Kidderminster or somewhere," he said. "There are other schools around here, some in Malvern, some out in the country, that would benefit."
