I AM appalled to learn that our cherished Malvern Theatres are once again to host an arms conference.
This is in spite of widely-supported opposition and protest at the time of the two previous events, aimed both at the theatres' management and Malvern Hills District Council. It seems that money speaks louder than conscience.
This year's conference takes place on September 20-22. It will again focus on high-tech battlespace surveillance, reconnaissance, command, control and targeting systems as used in the Iraq invasion. It will again be sponsored by some of the world's leading armaments manufacturers, including BAE Systems, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Thales.
I, and many like-minded Malvern residents, feel that this is a grotesquely inappropriate use of our theatres. On this occasion, I will not be organising a protest outside the theatres on behalf of Malvern Stop the War Coalition but I would be happy to assist any concerned local person who wishes to do so.
JOE STURGE, Cowleigh Road, Malvern.
