UPTON Youth Band's 'A' Corps finished 2005 championship runners-up and the Cadets were named 2005 cadet class champions at the British Youth Band Association Finals in Coventry. Following the success of the town's Severn Vale Marching Band Competition in September, the BYBA has given permission for it to be an annual event.

FORMER Upton mayor Mark Kerrigan has resigned from the town council due to business and family commitments. His decision was formally accepted at a council meeting on Tuesday, October 18. At the same meeting Paul Thomas was co-opted to join the council.

A MOBILE flood van will be in Upton on Wednesday (October 2), at 9am, to advertise the Environment Agency's Flood Awareness Campaign. This encourages people living in flood risk areas to prepare in advance to help minimise the damage and distress flooding can cause.

A new extension could be built at St Gabriel's with St Mary's CofE Primary School in Hanley Swan for a new administration office and staff room. A planning application has been submitted and work could begin early next year. Headteacher Anna Strether said the present office and staff room were far too small.

UPTON RFC is looking to recruit junior rugby players. President Chris Carkeek said the club wanted to establish a junior team in the near future. The age group will be determined by the level of interest. Call Mr Carkeek on 01905 371365.

A fun quiz for the RNLI takes place at Upton Memorial Hall on Friday, October 28, at 7.30pm. It will feature a raffle and stall selling Christmas cards. Tickets are £5.50, to include supper, on 01684 592406.

The Roger Mark Armad Jazz Band will be at the Memorial Hall, Upton, tomorrow (Saturday), at 8pm. The event is being organised by the Friends of the Upton Jazz Festival. Tickets are £10 (members £8).
