A POPULAR Alvechurch musical extravaganza has received a top award to continue its community efforts.

Sound show Mindfire was recently granted the prestigious UnLtd Millenium Award, enabling it to branch out further in showcasing local talents.

Concert founder and promoter Dr Rehan Ul-Haq said he was thrilled at the news, which spelled a bright future for the music in the community.

He said: "Mindfire is all about uniting people of all ages and musical tastes to enjoy a single community event, so this is great news for Alvechurch."

He added the concert gave young musicians the chance to perform in public and build their confidence.

Alvechurch youngsters Benjamin Essex and Rebecca Reacord will be taking the reigns from Dr Ul-Haq in running the next Mindfire event.

Both Benjamin and Rebecca helped organise past concerts and youth worker Rebecca won Alvechurch Parish Council's Young Achievers Award at the beginning of the year.

Mindfire was launched in August 2004 and benefits from the expertise of director Benjamin Ross, with support from Alvechurch Village Society and sponsorship from a number of local retailers.

A date is due to be fixed for the concert, which features sound sensations from jazz and soul to rock 'n' roll. Social Enterprise Foundation UnLtd offers awards to support aspiring individuals and groups wishing to make a difference in their community.
