A safer alternative to the Halloween celebration of death and evil spirits is being planned by Catshill Baptist Church.

Reverend Neil Bennett, pastor at the church in Milton Road, is inviting children aged between five and 11 to attend their Amazing Light Party on Monday, October 31, amid concerns that Halloween activities and products on sale are a distraction from the true history of the pagan festival.

"As a church, we do believe Halloween is not just harmless fun," said Rev Bennett.

"It was originally a pagan festival that emphasised death and evil spirits. We offer an alternative where it is safe, we don't charge and we encourage children to wear bright coloured clothes.

"We want the best for our children, and I argue that Halloween activities are not the best.

"Most kids will not be affected by the symbolism of Halloween, but some will hold deep feelings about it when they are fed with all this symbolism.

"God is not a killjoy but the church is certainly not going to celebrate something that is wrong."

Those attending the free party are being urged to wear light and bright clothes as an antidote to the black of Halloween, and many churches in the region are following suite by holding their own Christian alternative.

The party takes place at the church from 6pm, and there will be entertainment and refreshments.
