GUY Ipoua leapt off the bench to score the winning penalty which sent Hereford United through to the FA Cup first round last night.

Their 4-3 victory at Alfreton Town on spot-kicks, with the game tied at 1-1 in extra-time, was also down to two shoot-out saves from goalkeeper Craig Mawson.

Tony James, Andy Williams, Graham Evans and finally Ipoua put away their efforts to earn a November 6 trip to Cambridge City with just Andy Ferrell missing.

Mawson saved from Mark Turner, the son of Bulls boss Graham who had earlier put Alfreton ahead in the tie, and Chris White.

For the replay, the Bulls made one change from Saturday's 0-0 draw with Craig Stanley replacing the injured Ryan Green (knee).

Alfreton were the first to threaten when Jon Stevenson turned well to shoot from the edge of the area but Mawson, standing in for the unavailable Wayne Brown, saved comfortably on three minutes.

Stevenson had the ball in the net soon after but the effort was ruled out for a foul.

Hereford began to enjoy the better opportunities, forcing Alfreton's impressive young goalkeeper Adam Legzdins into several saves and some impressive handling.

And Bulls defender Tamika Mkandawire connected with Jon Brady's free-kick only to hit the crossbar.

But Alfreton struck the opener on 33 minutes when Mark Turner headed home Jason Blunt's ball into the box after the Bulls tried to clear a left-wing corner.

Recalled midfielder Stanley swooped for the equaliser seven minutes into the second-half by burying a far-post downward header from Brady's centre.

In increasingly gusty conditions, Hereford looked for a winner and Matt Bailey, in the last game of his one-month loan from Crewe, fired just wide.

Herefordshire-born Williams, on for Danny Carey-Bertram, went close but Birmingham City academy star Legzdins pulled off a fine save.

Alfreton's Mick Godber nearly pulled off a shock Alfreton win in injury-time with his header not far off target.

Bulls continued to boss the possession in extra-time, looking more comfortable on the ball, and Rob Purdie demanded another good Legzdins save in the second period before the penalty drama.

HEREFORD: Mawson; Purdie, Mkandawire, James, Jeannin; Brady, Pitman, Stanley (Evans), Ferrell; Carey-Bertram (Williams), Bailey (Ipoua). Subs not used: Blewitt, Beckwith.
