Redundancy pay

OLDER workers could face lower redundancy payments when new anti-age discrimination legislation comes into force next year, a new report warned.

The TUC said employees over the age of 41 received higher statutory payouts than younger people, but this will not be allowed when the new law is introduced next October.

The union organisation said it was worried that the Government would reduce redundancy rates for older workers to the same level as that for younger men and women.

Unions have campaigned for rules to outlaw age discrimination for years.

Women balloted

WOMEN workers at supermarket giant Morrisons are to be balloted on industrial action in a row over redundancy pay, it was announced.

The GMB union claimed that women employed at the firm's administrative centre in South Shields were only being offered a third of the redundancy given to male workers at distribution centres in other parts of the country.

The union has also lodged a legal claim for sex discrimination against Morrisons.

Intelligent dairy

FOOD producer Dairy Crest unveiled plans to expand its "brain-boosting" product range after customers gave the thumbs up to a special new milk.

The group is to launch a version of its St Ivel Gold spread enriched with omega-3 oils that many doctors believe improve concentration as well as being good for the heart.
