MALVERN Angels took to the road to play their latest West Midlands League division four fixture on Sunday.

CHESTERFIELD 0, MALVERN 'ANGELS' 71

Following the sad passing of Angels' head coach Mark Edwards this week, the girls honoured his memory with a minute's silence before setting about fulfilling Mark's goal of winning another league fixture.

The Angels came up against a team who were only able to field 12 players. Chesterfield also had a point to prove and presented the Angels with some measure of competition and gained credit for their determination and sportsmanship.

Although they battled well, Chesterfield were unable to breach the Angels defensive line and the gaps that developed in their back-line proved too tempting for the Angels back-row, who exploited every opportunity presented to them and ran in a total of 11 tries and eight conversions.

The Angels' forwards rucked and mauled with their usual tenacity and presented many stolen balls to feed the back-row with some impressive ball-handling.

Squad players and scorers for this fixture were: prop Lynsey Secomb, hooker Rachel Brannelly, prop Jo Barr, lock Ali Douglas, lock Mel Dawson, no 8 Abi Rhodes, scrum-half Caroline Hardy (one try), fly-half Deb Danby (eight conversions), centre Lou Saum (two tries), centre Babs Madsen (three tries), winger Laura Bradford (two tries), winger Layni Madsen (three tries). Substitutes: Lorna Courier (lock), Sarah Moorhead (lock), Sam Jones (scrum-half), Sarah Kellow (lock), Beth Smith (flanker).

Player-of-the-game was awarded to Layni Madsen.

This victory sees Malvern Angels sitting in a good position at the top of West Midlands four.

Forthcoming Angels' fixtures: Development v Earlsdon (h) on November 13; League v Newark (a) on November 27; Development v Old Leamingtonians (a) on December 4.
