SIR - You have printed many letters in the Worcester News regarding speed cameras, or safety cameras as they are euphemistically called.

I have never been in the position in which I have pleaded my case in front of the local magistrates with regards to a speeding fine after being caught speeding by a speed camera.

Like most people, I have been caught by a speed camera but, again, like most people, chose to put up my hands to the offence and pay up.

Nevertheless, if I did exercise my right to challenge the evidence in court, I would like to think that the judgement would be made by an independent third party.

Unfortunately, with regard to the local safety camera partnership, I would be most unhappy that my case was being judged by members of an organisation that are part of the safety camera partnership, namely the West Mercia Magistrates Court Service.

It is a case of the police and the judge being the same person. How can this be right? The magistrates should, like Caesar's wife, be above the faintest whiff of partiality. Justice should not only be done, it should be seen to be done. If I lost my case in front of a magistrate in these circumstance, I would be left wondering.
