A 19-year-old serial burglar was caught after he stole car keys from a house and drove off in the victim's car.

Shane Standen's fingerprints were discovered on a kitchen window frame.

Locked up on remand, he took police on a tour of the Malvern area and pointed out other homes he had raided.

At Worcester Crown Court Standen pleaded guilty to 20 offences and was given three years' detention.

Standen, of Atyeo Close, Malvern, committed the crimes between July and September to fund a £100-a-day drug habit. It followed his release from custody for other crimes.

On September 9, he raided a house in Madresfield Road, Malvern, while the female occupier was in bed.

Jennifer Josephs, prosecuting, said Standen got in through an open conservatory window and took the keys to a Vauxhall Vectra from a hook in the kitchen.

Police recovered the car hours later and Standen, a banned driver, was arrested after being spotted on a motorbike a day after the raid.

He is already serving a 22-week sentence for the driving offences. The new sentence will be added to the end of this.

Miss Josephs said Standen also breached community orders imposed for a commercial burglary and two assaults.

Two staff at Elgar Stores, in Malvern, were hurt when they tried to intervene as Standen was caught stealing crates of soft drinks.

He had a lengthy record going back to 1998, including aggravated vehicle taking, burglary and assault.

Abigail Nixon, defending, said Standen had stayed away from drugs until this year, when he fell in with the wrong crowd and began taking heroin.

While on remand, he realised his drug taking was out of hand and volunteered information to police "to stop the rot".

Recorder Richard Atkins said if Standen had been older he would have passed a sentence of four years or longer.

He added: "Night burglaries on occupied houses are horrendous for the people inside. This caused a woman untold trauma."
