SEVEN years of fundraising is on the brink of delivering a new base for the 2nd Malvern Scout Group in the nick of time.

The group has just lodged a planning application for the new hut with Malvern Hills District Council.

Group leader Pauline Richardson said Scouts, leaders and parents were absolutely thrilled that funding is now in place for the project.

"We badly need a new building, as despite our best efforts the current one is not in good repair," she said. "In another 12 months or so, we'd have been forced to move or disband."

After two unsuccessful attempts, the group has secured a lottery grant of £150,000 to build the new hut at its Spring Lane home.

Money from fundraising events held over the last seven years will make up the balance on the £187,000 project.

Mrs Richardson praised everyone involved with the group for their hard work.

"We've done everything from running fairs to working at the Spring Gardening Show," she said.

"We've got a very determined group of people and it has definitely all been worth it because it's given us a future."

Although a similar size, the new Scout Hut will feature one large room and allow the group's 80 Scouts, Cubs and Beavers to enjoy a wider range of activities.

It will be built behind the existing hut, allowing Scout activities to continue unaffected.

If planning permission is granted, Mrs Richardson hopes the work will begin next April and be finished in time for the start of Scouting's centenary year in 2007.

"It would be ideal if we could celebrate the centenary by moving into a brand new building," she said.
