WATCHING Flog It on BBC2 from Philip Serrell's salerooms, formerly the Memorial Hall in Barnards Green Road, started me reminiscing about how much of my childhood was spent in that hall.
Sunday afternoons in the early 50s we attended Sunday School at the hall. With a Christmas party, where we received a book for good attendance, my great uncle was a magician and performed his act and Arthur Russell put on a film show. All this was presided over by the vicar H J Friensener and his wife.
There was the annual GTC pantomime after rehearsing there for weeks. What a great dame the vicar was! Mrs Fri made all the costumes, the script was by Ivy Stephens (chemist's wife) and the dancers were trained by an ex-Tiller girl, Joan Fraser on the piano.
Thursday evenings Reg Box and his wife held Old Tyme Dances, which were such good fun, with the cream slices in the interval, much enjoyed as rationing was still on. Happy memories!
