PEOPLE in St John's who were concerned the University of Worcester would be extended its opening hours for its student bar have been assured this is not the case.

The Worcester News has received several calls from concerned homeowners who believed they had seen an application for the Henwick Grove campus' bar to open until 1am every night.

They feared it would lead to extra noise in the early hours during the week.

However, the university has now cleared up the confusion by saying the application was for exactly the same opening hours as it currently had - but was worded differently because of a change in licensing laws.

A spokesman for the university said: "There will be no opening until 1am, except on Fridays and Saturdays, which is exactly the same as it is now.

"When you first apply you have to say what will be the latest you need the licence for at any time in the year. We had to say 1am to cover us for some one-off events.

"Other than Fridays and Saturdays, I think there are three events in the calendar - the graduation ball, Hallowe'en and Valentine's Day - when we might have a licence until 1am. Again, that is no different from previous years."

He added that, unless the 1am application was entered, the annual balls and events would be breaching the university's licensing agreement.
