A NEW order will come into effect at Church Hill Centre on Friday giving police more powers to restrict drinking.
Following incidents of alcohol related antisocial behaviour, Redditch Council carried out consultation on proposals to restrict alcohol consumption.
When the Designated Public Places Order comes into effect, police officers, community support officers and other accredited people will have powers to ask people in the centre to stop drinking alcohol or confiscate it.
Any person who fails without reasonable excuse to comply will be committing an offence and can be fined up to £500.
It is hoped this will encourage people to drink in more appropriate locations such as in their own homes or the shopping centre's pub.
Areas included are the Church Hill Centre encompassing the grounds of Church Hill and Ravens Bank schools, the church centre, medical centre, clinic, car parks, the shopping centre, the YMCA, Mendip House and Church Hill Community Centre.
