JOHN Trewick is confident Hereford United can upset the Football League apple-cart again in tonight's LDV Vans Trophy clash against Scunthorpe United (7.45).

The northern quarter-final showdown at Edgar Street is a repeat of last season's first round tie when Hereford knocked out the Iron 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

The Bulls went on to reach the area semi-final, before eventually losing to eventual winners Wrexham, and could reach the same stage again.

They have maintained their proud reputation for ousting Football League opponents in the competition, overcoming challenges from Mansfield Town and Port Vale this term.

And United coach Trewick believes there is another giant-killing offering just around the corner.

"This year and last year, we've taken some good scalps," said Trewick. "We've shown on many occasions that we can match sides from League One and Two. We are capable of playing to their level.

"It is not as if we are catching these sides on bad days. We have beaten several teams playing good football.

"Sometimes, I think teams from the Football League don't play their absolute strongest side, but they are still strong.

"Scunthorpe had just got promoted last year and did not bring their full complement. We got through then and we are looking positively for a win again.

"I expect they will play a very strong side, similar to that which beat Halifax. They know they are only three matches away from a final at Cardiff.

"That's a long way off for us at the moment. Like anybody else, we would like to get to a final, but it's too early to talk about it."

Striker Danny Carey-Bertram, who scored the winning penalty against Brian Laws' side last year, is doubtful after picking up a cold, while Ryan Green is nursing an ankle injury.

Carey-Bertram came off the bench during Saturday's 7-1 FA Trophy success at Bognor Regis, an excellent result which Trewick believes gives United plenty of confidence.

He added: "Whenever you play well and score goals, it does lift confidence and morale. The secret is to keep building on it and we must try and continue that form against Scunthorpe tonight."
