SIR - George Cowley completely misunderstands me in averring that cyclists on an "otherwise unoccupied" pavement can in any way be a menace (Letters, December 6) particularly since I expressed disapproval of using pavements to the danger or detriment of others.

It is hardly commonsense to expect an elderly cyclist to risk life and limb on a busy highway when immediately alongside is a stretch of pavement completely devoid of users. George Cowley is hardly the "doddery old bloke" he claims - to many of us he is just a youngster. Perhaps, with maturity, he will come to realise that a commonsense attitude is more important than adhering to the letter of laws that haven't been repealed, and which were laid down in other days to meet other circumstances.

JOHN HINTON,

Worcester.
