NEW Worcestershire batsman Phil Ja-ques has been included in Australia's 12-man squad for the second Test against South Africa starting in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

The New South Wales opener replaces Justin Langer, who will miss the match after straining his hamstring during the current Test at Perth's WACA ground.

Stuart MacGill has been recalled after a successful Test series against the West Indies, with New South Wales paceman Stuart Clark dropping out.

"Phil Jaques virtually demanded selection," chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said. "His form has been outstanding for New South Wales over the past few seasons and he thoroughly deserves the opportunity.

"We have taken the option of selecting a specialist opener in Jaques enabling us to stabilise the middle order where Michael Hussey has been doing a great job.

"And Stuart MacGill's inclusion allows the option of us playing two spinners if the conditions in Melbourne suit."

Australia squad for second Test: Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Nathan Bracken, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hodge, Michael Hussey, Phil Jaques, Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill, Glenn McGrath, Andrew Sy-monds, Shane Warne.
