A TEENAGE motorist has been banned from driving after attempting to overtake traffic on dangerous bends on the A44 in a potentially fatal manoeuvre.

Magistrates heard how 18-year-old Edward Bailey, of Avon Drive, Eckington, twice tried to pass another vehicle on the A44 towards Worcester before being stopped by police.

They were told how his actions were in contravention of double white lines on the stretch of road.

Bailey appeared before Worcester Magistrates Court where he admitted dangerous driving on Monday.

Prosecuting, Mark Soper said police were initially drawn to Bailey driving one of three cars spotted leaving the Worcester Road Tesco in Evesham.

He said: "The officers thought there was something a little bit out of the ordinary as to how they left the car park and decided to follow them."

Magistrates heard how the cars then headed along the A44 in the direction of Worcester - with Bailey recorded as doing speeds of between 75mph and 80mph.

Mr Soper described how they saw the Swansea University student try to overtake one of the cars on a left-hand-bend, attempting the same manoeuvre on another bend. He said: "At this point the officers thought if something had been coming the other way it could have been quite a nasty accident so they decided to stop him."

The court was told how they were three other people in Bailey's car and, when told he was driving dangerously, Bailey replied 'I was stupid - am I going to lose my licence?' In mitigation, Neil Chawla said: "He accepts he'll lose his licence and will have to take an extended test as a result of what, in effect, was a moment of madness.

"He's completely at a loss as to the stupidity that occurred on that night. Essentially no-one was injured but that was more out of luck than judgement."

Bailey was banned from driving for 15 months, fined £200 and ordered to pay £35 costs.
