STOURPORT drivers have been given an early Christmas gift after it was decided to change plans to close a busy road.

Mitton Street was due to be closed to all through traffic on Tuesday, January 3 but the essential water main repair work has been postponed until February 13 and work will now be done in stages.

The first section of work will take place at the bottom of Mitton Street and means drivers can divert through Severn Road and Lichfield Street, although lorries will have to use other roads.

Stourport county councillor, John Holden, said: "It is fantastic news for everyone - especially the traders. I am glad of the compromise and it means parts of the town will not be cut off."

A spokesman for Severn Trent Water, the company carrying out the repairs, said: "We feel that by breaking the work in Mitton Street into sections we will not be causing as much disruption as was the case with the five-week closure."
