MALVERN Library is getting much more than a spring clean as builders and decorators continue work on a major development of the whole complex.

Work on the £1.5m project began in November 2004 and has seen a 600ft extension built at the rear of the Graham Road building, replacing and old 1940s structure which has doubled the size of

the library.

The library has flung open its doors again following a three-week closure to allow the entire stock to be transferred to the new extension.

Now workers have turned their attentions to refurbishing the old part of the building by gutting it of all the old fixtures and fittings.

New heating and lighting, carpets, furniture and equipment will then be installed to bring it up to date with the new extension at the rear.

Work is also under way on the landscaping of the area at the front of the building, which is due to be completed at the end of this month.

It will mean the front entrance will then be at ground level so users do not have to use a ramp or steps to enter the building.

Nigel Preedy, strategic library manager for south Worcester-shire, said he hoped it would encourage more people to visit and also to stay longer.

He added: "I think it'll transform the library service. The people of Malvern have had a difficult couple of years in a reduced space but we're now looking forward to offering them a much better facility in an improved environment to sit and read, study or have a coffee."

Work was due to finish on the development in January but is now not expected to be completed until May 2006.

Once finished, the building will feature a lift, quiet areas for reference and study, a coffee shop, more room for books and 20 internet terminals - instead of the three that had been available.

The exhibition facilities and local studies library will also return to the building.
