"The residents of and visitors to Barnards Green during this Christmas show time have been enlightened somewhat as to the progressive character of the shopkeepers in that locality," reported the Gazette 100 years ago.
"It is very evident that the extension of the electric cable into that district was well advised, as no less than half-a-dozen tradesmen have adopted the light, and the advantage taken of the adaptability of the illuminant during this festive season leaves no manner of doubt as to its popularity with the Barnards Green people at any rate.
"Certainly the effect created was well worth a visit. Arc lamps were very prominent, particularly two extra large ones, while one establishment was tastefully illuminated with festoons of smaller glow lamps.
"The bright and gay appearance given to this enterprising suburb of Malvern should have its effect, showing as it does that however lethargic the business men in the centre of the town may be, those in Barnards Green are alive to the possibilities."
