MALVERN'S English Braids has tied up a take-over deal with a leading rope maker that will create new jobs.

The Spring Lane firm has bought the cordage division of Marlow Ropes, which makes ropes for yachts.

As part of the deal, it also takes control of Ibex, which produces shock cord used in bungee jumping.

The Malvern firm's founder and managing director Peter Earp said he was honoured, proud and humbled to own two of the leading names in the business.

"Marlow has a 150-year history and was the market leader when we entered the yachting market in 1975," he said. "The purchase bodes well for the future and is a great success for all three companies and for the people of Malvern."

The two firms will retain individual identities and be run as competitors.

"The teams at Marlow and Ibex are delighted that we are the people who have financed them to put them back to their former glory," he said. "The development teams will certainly carry on in a competitive spirit. "

Mr Earp, who faced heavy competition in his bid to acquire Marlow for an undisclosed sum, said he was delighted that the companies would continue to operate in the UK.

"I feel very strongly about manufacturing migrating out of this country," he said. "While I'm here, it will not happen at any of our factories."

The 70 staff at English Braids toasted the news with a celebration breakfast on Friday, December 23, as Mr Earp confirmed he would be looking to create new jobs.

"More jobs will be created, although it's too early to say how many," he said. "We'll certainly see a healthy improvement over the next six months."

English Braids has been a leading producer of rope and cord since 1968 and now supplies sailing, telecommunications and industrial markets.

Marlow Ropes went into receivership in November. Its marine division, which manufactures ropes for ships and offshore applications, remains for sale.
