HUNDREDS of people lined Upton's streets to support Croome and West Warwickshire Hunt's traditional Christmas Eve meet.

Joint master Diana Ralph believes the turnout was the biggest yet.

"The streets were packed and we seem to get more and more support every year," she said. "It was an incredible atmosphere."

Eighty riders met at The King's Head, while supporters enjoyed mince pies, a brass band and a visit from Father Christmas.

Due to new legislation, the hunt used a bird of prey at the meet for the first time.

Mrs Ralph said Boss, the golden eagle, attracted a lot of public attention.

"Boss had thousands of photos taken," she said. "He's very good-natured and it's quite unusual to find one that's so people- friendly."

Although there was a sizeable police presence, the meet passed without incident.

"The police are always very helpful and there was not a single protester in sight," said Mrs Ralph.
