TAKE a step in the right direction to a fit and healthy year ahead by walking in the Worcestershire countryside this winter.

That is the message from the county's countryside officers who are encouraging people to put their best foot forward and get some gentle exercise in the fresh air this festive season.

City residents do not have to go very far to experience the benefits of a stroll in the countryside.

The Worcester Woods Country Park near County Hall offers two half-mile way-marked circular walks, a children's play area and a large grassy events field.

Kate Westlake, the county council's countryside marketing officer, said: "Winter isn't just a time for snuggling up warm and cosy in front of the fire.

"There's lots to see and do. So this festive season, why not walk off that extra helping of Christmas dinner?

"Walking is a great form of exercise which is fun, free and you can enjoy with family and friends. Why not wrap up warm and head out and see what you discover?"

Worcester Woods has extensive area of ancient oak woodland and wildflower meadows within easy reach of Worcester city centre.
