SOUTH Worcestershire police were this week investigating more than a dozen complaints about the illegal use of mini-motos in the four days since Christmas.

But they have warned that new powers enabling them to seize and destroy the machines would be used if owners persisted in breaking the law.

Three of the 14 incidents reported by December 19 were in Evesham - in Kings Road, Rudge Road and Rous Lench.

South Worcestershire police spokesman Richard Bull said: "The new legislation is a strong and useful power within the police armoury. We are, however, taking a cautious approach initially.

"While treating every incident on its merits, we are hopeful that a persuasive, educational approach is preferable, including taking names and speaking to parents.

"If that does not work then there is always the permanent solution of seizure and destruction.

"In virtually every circumstance, anyone under age using the machines commits up to seven offences every time they take them on the highway, which includes the pavement."

After any seizure the owner must pay £105 for the seizure and £12 a day storage.

If the mini-moto is not destroyed it is handed back - but only when the appropriate insurance documentation and licences are produced to the police.
