STOURPORT readers are being given more time to browse the bookshelves or surf the net at the town's library.

Bookworms of all ages are being invited to take advantage of extended opening hours.

From this week the library is open from 9.30am until 5.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It is closed all day on Wednesdays, but is open late until 8pm on Fridays.

To make a splash for the New Year changes staff have enlisted the help of "The Landlocked Mermaid," who will be at the Worcester Street library on Saturday.

Children will be able to meet the enchantress, who desperately wants to find the sea, from 2pm at the free event and she will also entertain them with stories and songs.

Longer opening hours have also been introduced at Kidderminster and Bewdley libraries under the county-wide scheme.
