WORCESTER Warriors prop Chris Horsman faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after the club revealed he is to have ankle surgery this week.

The Welsh international will go under the knife on Thursday, which will put him out of next month's Six Nations.

Despite reports that Horsman faces five months out, Worcester's director of rugby, John Brain, insists it is too early to put a timetable on his recovery.

"Until the surgery has been completed we can't be sure exactly how long he will be out of the game but we'll do everything we can at the club to ensure that his recovery will be complete," said Brain.

Horsman has struggled with his ankle since he hobbled off in the Premiership match with Saracens on September 17.

The injury didn't prevent him from appearing for Wales in the autumn internationals, but it has restricted his playing time for Worcester since his return to the club at the start of December.

Brain added: "Chris has been playing through the pain from his ankle for some time now and the point has been reached where surgery is the only real option.

"It is a blow for us, but not an unexpected one and we have enough quality props at the club to deal with the situation."

Tevita Taumopeau has been filling in at tight-head in recent games and will now compete for the place with Lee Fortey.

Horsman's injury will be a big blow to Wales boss Mike Ruddock, who has already seen his squad depleted by injury and suspensions.

Back-row Ryan Jones, lock Brent Cockbain and full-back Kevin Morgan, who all played key roles in last season's Six Nations Grand Slam triumph, have already been ruled out, while centre Tom Shanklin is also likely to miss all five games.

Centre Gavin Henson is currently banned for the first three matches but is appealing against the decision in Dublin.
