TWO Kidderminster men who took part in a fight outside a takeaway food outlet have been jailed.

Judge John Cavell told the pair at Worcester Crown Court that the public were "fed up" with young men getting the worse for drink and indulging in street violence.

The judge watched CCTV footage, shot by police, which showed Kevin Kilkenny and Michael O'Brien mounting attacks in New Road, Kidderminster.

Kilkenny was seen rolling on the ground with another man and O'Brien launching karate kicks at victims.

Police arrested them in the area at 3am on November 6 last year and both admitted being drunk. Kilkenny claimed he was offered a fight inside the takeaway, before it erupted in the street.

Jailing 23-year-old Kilkenny, of Shrubbery Street, Kidderminster, for six months, the judge said he had come close to an extended sentence because his record included assault on police and assault causing actual bodily harm.

He gave O'Brien, 21, of Park Street, Kidderminster, four months. He only had a previous conviction for criminal damage. Both men admitted affray.

Alcohol was at the root of Kilkenny's problems, which he drank in a bid to cope with his partner's drug addiction, said his barrister, Michael Aspinall.

She was expecting their third child and he had been forced to stop work to look after her.

Ex-soldier, O'Brien, had hoped to resume his military career but a jail term had dashed his ambitions, said his counsel, Andrew Tucker.

He added: "He had more drink than he could handle."
