AN inquest has been opened into the death of a 54-year-old man found hanging at his home in Far Forest.

Kelvin Cockram, of Oakleaf Rise, was thought to have spiralled into a state of depression after he lost his job as an alarm engineer for Romec, an installation and maintenance service for the Royal Mail Group.

His wife, Helen, made the discovery when she returned to the house and found her husband hanging from an electrical cable from the loft space on the landing at 5.40pm on January 11.

Mr Cockram's troubles began last October when he lost his job. He was awaiting the results of an internal hearing but, according to the family, failed to get the desired result.

Speaking at the inquest in Stourport, on Tuesday, his son, Sean Cockram, spoke of his father's deepening depression.

Sean, who works for the British Transport Police, said: "After October 26, my father spiralled into depression, regarding work.

"That day, he was obviously successful in taking his life but there was nothing to indicate to my mother, myself or to my brother that he was going to kill himself.

"He'd been out with friends in the weeks previous to that and they all said they would never have known there was anything wrong with him.

"However, he could sometimes be like a stuck record talking about his job and would go on and on about it, wondering if he would get his job back. That was all that mattered to him."

Sean added on the day he died, his father had been eagerly awaiting the result of the hearing but had been told the matter was still ongoing. He said the loss of his job had continually "tormented" him.

Coroner Victor Round said he would gather statements from former Romec work colleagues before he concluded the inquest.

The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
