INTERNATIONAL peace campaigner Bruce Kent was on hand to express his views on military intervention and peace making at a conference in Bromsgrove.
The veteran campaigner gave two presentations as part of a multi-faith peace and reconciliation event at Barnes Close in Chadwich last Saturday. They were discussing subjects such as the possession, selling and threat of nuclear weapons, disarmament and the stance of British churches on the Trident nuclear weapons programme.
He also addressed the cultural impact of children's toys and air shows that portray a "killing theme".
"Britain's culture continues to be one of war," he told the audience.
"Children's toys reinforce the killing theme. We never see a model of a UN peacekeeping soldier. We see family days out at the air show where kids see war planes doing their stuff, Red Arrows, VTO bombers, wartime bombers.
"It's seen as good family fun and yet the message is clear - killing your enemy is a good thing to do."
Ian Ring, community co-ordinator for Community for Reconciliation at Barnes Close, said: "It was a very good atmosphere and a very good discussion of the issues raised.
"Bruce came across very well and we were very pleased to have him. We also looked at how we can raise awareness of peace issues, so something more than just a discussion came out of it."
