THE chairman of a disability pressure group is calling for a service to help people with mobility difficulties get into Kidderminster town centre.
Mark Lawley, of Disability Action Wyre Forest, wants Wyre Forest District Council to consider opening a Shopmobility scheme.
Elsewhere in the country, the schemes provide equipment such as manual and powered wheelchairs and scooters.
Following a visit to a Shopmobility scheme, which opened in Bromsgrove in December and is run by Bromsgrove District Council, Mr Lawley said he felt it did not make sense for a town the size of Kidderminster not to have a similar facility.
He explained the scheme would benefit anyone, including residents and visitors from further afield, who might have difficulty getting around the town centre on their own and would make the town more accessible.
Mr Lawley added: "It is very important for people to know they can get around the town easily. It would encourage more people to come to Kidderminster."
A spokesman for the council said: "The district council has not, at this moment in time, been asked to consider any formal proposals for a Shopmobility scheme from Disability Action Wyre Forest.
"However, we and our relevant partners would, no doubt, be prepared to consider such proposals if any were put forward."
