A HISTORIC church in Astley is facing closure unless £120,000 can be raised to pay for essential repair work.

Parishioners of St Peter's have two years to find the much-needed cash to save the 900-year-old building.

Nine members of the congregation formed The Friends of St Peter's group to help co-ordinate the first phase of the fund-raising effort, which would pay for the necessary work to the roof and tower.

They will attempt to collect a further £80,000 in phase two of the project to pay for further restoration works to bring the Grade One listed building back to its former glory. More than £3,000 has already been gathered through a series of events and applications for grants are being put together.

The Rev Alan Norkett, who has been at the church for four years, admitted they faced a huge task but was hopeful for the future.

He explained: "We have got to have people who want to do something and that is where the committee comes in. There has already been a big turnaround and everyone involved is a lot more optimistic.

"The church was on the brink of closure last year and I sent quite a blunt letter to villagers that spelt out how much work was needed to be done to save it. This cause is so important because the church is part of the village's heritage and it has to be preserved for future generations. We need to do something before it is too late."

Youngsters from Astley CE Primary School, who regularly visit the church, have already pitched in to help the cause to the tune of £200.
