A BROADWAY-based multi-millionaire businessman has been named as the fifth wealthiest man in the Midlands.

Jorgen Philip Sorenson is also responsible for establishing a leading adult learning centre on the Farncombe Estate.

The Swedish-born boss of Group 4 Securicor bought the 100-acre Farncombe Estate in 1964.

Six years later he added the adjoining property, Foxhill Manor which came with another 100 acres.

The total estate now extends to around 300 acres and adult courses run there include art history and art appreciation courses, bridge weekends, countryside courses and all manner of educational facilities designed to enrich the mind and spirit.

In addition to Group 4 Securicor and the Dormy House Hotel, which he also owns, Mr Sorenson also chairs Ecover, the environmentally-friendly detergent maker with the slogan "We couldn't care more".

Ecover was established in 1979 to provide ecological cleaning products on a large scale.

The company is now established in 22 countries and as concern grows for the environment amid fears of global warming and sustainability becomes synonymous with progress, Ecover is expected to feature more and more in shopping baskets one way or another.

Ecover is also heavily involved in sponsoring yachting, an environmentally-friendly sport and the company sponsors its own racing yacht.

Mr Sorenson is also involved in Harbour Quay which plans a £50 million floating hotel in London's Docklands.

Mr Sorenson, who began with Group 4, has a significant stake in the enlarged Group 4 Securicor, thought to be worth around £250 million and has in the past sold shares worth £260 million.

He was scheduled to stand down last autumn but this has been delayed until June this year.

Ecover and Farncombe Adult Learning Centre are now also contributing to his fortune, leading the authors of the Midlands Rich List to estimate his wealth at around £560 million.
