EMERGENCY funding to prevent the roof of a Bewdley tourist attraction caving in has been granted.

Wyre Forest District Council's cabinet was asked to approve a request for a supplementary estimate of up to £30,000 to cover the work in the current financial year at its meeting last Thursday.

Tiles and timber that cover the top of the buildings to either side of The Shambles at Bewdley Museum have been deteriorating over several years.

In a report to the cabinet, council officers said that "during high winds and snow, there could be a catastrophic failure of the timbers, resulting in substantial additional expense to repair and refurbish the listed buildings".

Leader of the district council, Stephen Clee said after the meeting: "The museum is a very important piece of our history in our district and if it needs money spent on it, we will find it. It is unfortunate that the timbers are rotting. It is a jewel in our crown."
