AS has become the tradition, the first programme of the New Year features members who have not given a presentation before.
On January 13, the main contributors were May Crowther, who previously had contributed to a programme, and Graham Wolfenden, a totally new presenter. Treasurer Bob Drew introduced the programme with Mozart's Musical Joke, as celebration of the composer's birth in 1756.
Mrs Crowther was ill, so her prepared programme was presented by Joy Scoones. The topic was the singing and career of Mrs Crowther's fellow Australian, Dame Joan Sutherland. The recordings heard varied from Lo, hear the gentle lark, Ah! Salut a la France and Tornami a vagheggiar from Handel's Alcina.
Mr Wolfenden supplied the audio equipment for the programme, briefly introducing the various components, then he played the ballet score for Stavinsky's The Firebird, recorded by Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra.
