THE new Rhydd Covert activity centre began to take shape when the roof went on this week.

Builders have progressed well with the £142,000 project and the first phase is expected to be complete by the end of this month.

At that point the main structure will be finished and work can start on the second stage which involves fitting out the interior.

Operation Covert, the public appeal launched by the Shuttle/Times & News in conjunction with Kidderminster and District Scout Council 16 months ago, has now passed the £121,000 mark and it is hoped the new cemtre will be open in June.

Editor Clive Joyce said: "It has been a truly remarkable effort by the community. Wyre Forest people from all walks of life have taken the appeal to their hearts and we have been overwhelmed by the response.

"More than £60,000 has been raised by the community and a further £60,000 has come from the sale of the John Stretton Hall.

"We now need just one last push to achieve our goal of having a purpose-built centre which is so important to the thousands of young people who go to Rhydd each year."

He added: "Businesses are now playing a major part and the total cost of the project is being reduced all the time as companies save us money by donating items for the new building.

"Windows, sanitaryware and wooden cladding are just some of the things that have been kindly donated and any other firms wishing to offer assistance can contact me on 01562 633348."
