A TEENAGER who caused an accident when she took her parents' car for a spin while still a learner driver has been banned from driving for a year.

Worcester Magistrates' Court heard on Tuesday how Charlene Manning's parents were on holiday when she decided to drive their Ford Mondeo round to her boyfriend's house at around 7pm on May 25, 2005.

But the 19-year-old, of St James' Close in Evesham, pulled out in front of a transit van at the junction of Briar Close in the town, causing it to take evasive action and collide with another car.

Mark Thompson, prosecuting, described the incident as something of a prank which had gone wrong.

"She made a full and frank admission at the scene," he added.

"Her father has already paid £2,000 to the van driver and £1,500 to the other victim as well as £1,200 to repair his own car."

Ahmed Hussain, defending, said Manning accepted she was just a provisional licence holder and had no insurance.

"Her father has made it clear that she will have to pay him back for all the damage she caused.

"This was a youthful indiscretion on her part and she has been embarrassed and humiliated by the whole incident."

Manning was fined £200 and disqualified from driving for 12 months for the offence of aggravated vehicle taking, fined £150 and had her licence endorsed for driving with no insurance and had her licence further endorsed for driving without a full licence.

She was also ordered to pay £43 costs.
