A DISABLED Wyre Forest resident has called for increased safety measures at a busy Kidderminster junction after almost being hit by a bus while crossing.

Helen Wilkes, who uses a powered scooter, fears it is only a matter of time before an accident happens on the corner of Sutton Road and Stourport Road.

The 49-year-old said: "Something needs to be done because it is too dangerous. You cannot see around the corner from one side road because of a fence and the waiting area in the middle of the road is not big enough for wheelchairs, prams or scooters.

"I cross there about 10 times a week on my way to visit my daughter. I have almost been hit quite a few times. A bus only narrowly missed me as it came around the corner. It is like a lottery for drivers and pedestrians."

The near misses prompted Mrs Wilkes's husband, Alf, to contact Worcestershire County Council to voice his concerns.

He explained: "The council did tell me they had delayed the traffic lights by two seconds but that has not made any difference. A lot of drivers jump the lights so that extra time has gone straight away.

"Obviously, I am worried for my wife's safety but the same thing applies for people with pushchairs. I know it would cost money but you simply cannot put a price on a life. It is just an accident waiting to happen."

A council spokesman said plans were being looked at to place a zebra crossing in Sutton Road to help pedestrians.

He added: "It is currently being considered but most of the design has been approved and it is expected to go through without many problems.

"At the moment, there is no timescale and it could be any time within the next year because there are still a few factors that need to be sorted."
