ERRORS at the back have returned to haunt Kidderminster Harriers -- just when boss Stuart Watkiss thought he had found the solution.

Harriers conceded only three goals in an unbeaten six-match run, including clean sheets at home to Cheltenham Town and Rushden and Diamonds as well as at Darlington.

But that hot form has almost been forgotten after their defence creaked badly to go down 3-1 to Mansfield Town and 3-0 at Wycombe Wanderers last weekend.

Watkiss selected what he believed to be his best four defenders and used Wayne Hatswell and Simon Weaver as full-backs, rather than in their regular central positions.

It paid off over the six-match streak from February 22 until March 26 and gave Harriers a massive lift in their bid to beat the drop from Coca-Cola League Two.

But, with skipper Hatswell likely to be a victim of team changes for today's visit of Bury, it seems Watkiss is having to alter his thinking at an essential part of the season.

He admitted: "It's perplexing how we can do so well for six games and then this. We looked to be solid at the back and seemed to have stemmed the flow of goals.

"But, all of a sudden, we have come unstuck and conceded six goals in a game-and-a-half.

"We were way short of the mark for half-an-hour at Wycombe. We had frustrated them but as soon as the first goal went in we didn't get any response from our players at all.

"All the six goals have been avoidable. It wasn't really down to great play by the opposition but was down to us not defending in certain situations.

"It worked over the six games but we have made too many mistakes. In the remaining games, we have to get back to being the mean team we were during that unbeaten period."
